Half past six at night in Chicago. The city was cold as ice as Liz was leaving the office in North Michigan Ave. She looked a few times at her cellphone, hoping she'd get a call from her boss asking her to stay there working so she couldn't make it to a meeting she had been postponing for the last eight years.
She took the elevators and a cab that drove all the way down to millenium park, one of the most beautiful parks of Chicago. There was something inside her chest keeping her from breathing normally, aching every beat of her heart. She really wanted to go there and meet him, but she was afraid - not sure of what, but she was sure as hell afraid of something. Before paying the taxi driver and entering the park, she went through her high school memories - her best friend, her ex boyfriends - how weird it would be to talk about all that after the years that went by?
She took a deep breath, even though she instantly regretted it, since the cold air freezed her insides. The park had a yellow lightening design giving a whole golden color to the blue and cold chicago night.
While approching to the Cloud Gate - they have never met there nor in anywhere else in the city, but she simply knew she would find him there - Liz looked after that familiar old face among all those strange people. After a few minutes, that felt like a couple of hours, she found him in the crowd and waited him to get closer. She wouldn't know what to say, so she desperately hoped he would start the conversation.
"I honestly thought you wouldn't make it here." - she couldn't decide what she missed the most: the enchanting smile or the greenish eyes.
"It's been eight years, Alex. Why wouldn't I come?"
"Well, you didn't come eight years ago, remember?"
"What do you want?" - Liz sighed - "Honestly, be quick, it's cold as ice here."
"Honestly?" - he looked away, observing the naked oaks in the park, then stared at her for a few seconds - "To be quite honest, I'd hug you strongly now, then I'd shake you for being such a stupid human being back then. Afterwards, when you'd be all dizzy, I'd kiss you, because that's exactly what I'd have done the most in the last eight bloody years."
"C'mon, Alex. Are you gonna tell me you are not over me? You never found anyone?" - she was serious - "You made it to college, right? You grew up, you are a man now... apparently a detective..."
"I wouldn't say I became obcessed, but there were days that I thought of you, wondered where the hell you were, who you were. I don't know, Liz, I just wanted to know what made you change our destiny so stupidly. We had everything planned out, remember?"
"Jesus, all those years and you're still a hopeless romantic." - she laughed.
"Why?" - she looked down, playing with her feet and Alex lifted her chin with his index finger. Both of them, without the other knowing, remembered it was just like that back in high school. - "Don't waste our time. You've thought about this, you know you did."
Elizabeth approched, looking deeply into his eyes. She felt his heavy, fast and hot breathing. Before she could even noticed, Alex pulled her closer, by grabbing her coat in her waist and kissed her. It was more than just a kiss. It wasn't a simple kiss. He didn't even think about Summer, he didn't consider if Lizzie had someone, maybe she was even married. However, it didn't matter. He longed for that kiss for so many days and nights, but he didn't even know why anymore.
He just wanted it. They both wanted it.
